5th Virginia Authenticity Guidelines
We have established a few policies that contribute to everyone's enjoyment and
respect others "magic moments". These rules apply 24-hours a day at all events,
whether there are spectators present or not.
1. In the past years members have been changing out of period dress at various periods
of the day, especially in the evening periods. This has become a concern, and this year
all members will be required to maintain period dress for the full duration of the event
weekend. All members (including children) are to appear in correct period attire and are
to remain in period attire from the official beginning of the event to the official end of
the event. In the mornings and evenings all modern clothing should be covered with wrappers,
etc. or members in modern dress will be asked to exit the camp or stay inside their tents.
2. No modern items are to be seen at any time. They must be hidden and covered throughout
the event. This includes but is not limited to pop cans, coolers, modern food, modern cookware,
coolers, etc. These rules apply 24-hours a day at all events, whether there are spectators
present or not.
3. Non period cigarettes should be smoked outside of the event area, out of sight of the public
and your fellow reenactors.
4. No non-period body piercing jewelry (anything other than one set of holes for normal earrings)
leave the body jewelry at home. No nail polish, modern makeup, modern eyeglasses should be replaced with period eye wear when possible, modern hairstyles (men & women, e.g. blue hair, Mohawks, etc).
5.Children under 12 must be supervised at all times and must be dressed in period civilian attire. No
modern toys are allowed. There are many web-sights that offer period toys.
6. Any furniture and material culture items used should be period appropriate style, whether they
are reproduction or original. Graniteware, spongeware, bright blue speckled camping dishes are not period. There are numerous web-sights and books showing the styles of furniture, dishes, etc of the civil war era.
7. Women and children should not be in military camp during the event. Military members want to
experience the military lifestyle of camp life and efforts should be made to allow that. There
is limited documentation of women and children in military camps; the 5th is attempting to portray
this time period as closely as we can.
8. Cigarette butts, styrofoam, tea bags, etc, other modern items that do not burn well are not
be thrown in the firepits.
